A tradition of great CAREGiving
Caring. Compassionate. Capable. Reliable. Dependable. Professional. Trusted. Our CAREGivers are all of these things and more.
At Home Instead Senior Care we employ, train and develop people to become outstanding CAREGivers. The heart and soul of our business, our CAREGivers are local residents of Adelaide & the Fleurieu Peninsula, many of whom have cared for an older loved one themselves and have developed a genuine passion and interest in older people. Our CAREGivers are fully insured and undergo an intensive three phase interview process, including no less than six reference checks and a criminal background check.
Home Instead's exclusive multi-phase training programs equip each new CAREGiver with the skills they need to provide the best care for their clients. These training programs have been specifically created to ensure our employees are well prepared to handle any CAREGiving situation. Our training also provides a pathway for all CAREGivers to obtain a Certificate III in Individual Support. Training topics include effective communication with seniors, activity planning, recognising illnesses and depression, safety, and more.
In 2008, Home Instead Senior Care became the first private provider of home care services to establish a specialist dementia care training program delivered exclusively to its own CAREGivers, which complements other professionally developed in-house training programs provided by Home Instead Senior Care. This particular program allows CAREGivers to:
- Maintain a safe environment for your loved one.
- Manage changing behaviours.
- Provide nutritious meals.
- Provide effective mind-stimulating activities.
- Create social interaction.
- Supervise daily activities, and more.

Leonie McCallum commenced as a CAREGiver with Home Instead Senior Care Adelaide East in June 2013 and has continually embraced and demonstrated the values and philosophies of Home Instead Senior Care. She is relentless in her pursuit of enabling a better quality of life, by engaging her clients and rediscovering hobbies or interests that brings a sparkle to their eye. She is positive, enthusiastic and encouraging yet humble, empathetic, and respectfully discreet. With a wonderfully witty sense of humour, Leonie never takes herself too seriously – but her steely determination in enhancing her client’s circumstances is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to do what we do. Leonie is a determined CAREGiver and takes any opportunity to professionally develop her skills - she completed her Home Instead training course with ease and moved on to complete the additional professional development courses (palliative care training, specialist dementia care training, medication support etc.) with flying colours. To date, Leonie has completed over 3000 hours of care.
Her unique approach to care, coupled with her innate ability to take the lead and build trust, has gained the attention and respect of Home Instead Senior Care on both a state and national basis, claiming the title of the South Australian CAREGiver of the Year 2015 as well as the Australian CAREGiver of the Year 2015.
Valerie commenced as a CAREGiver at Home Instead Senior Care Adelaide East in November 2011 and is an optimal example of what Home Instead Senior Care values look like when put in to practice. She was selected as the CAREGiver of the Quarter in July 2015 after showing a keen interest in learning new skills and providing extraordinary care to her clients. She is a very reliable CAREGiver and will assist as much as she possibly can. These qualities are reinforced through the continual positive feedback that our office receives about her approach to care.
